Australian public holiday overlays for FIFO rosters

FIFO Planner displays Australian public holidays directly on your roster calendar. Choose your home state or territory and its holidays appear on the same calendar as your swing and R&R days, so you can see at a glance when a holiday falls on a swing day or during your time at home.

All states and territories supported

Public holiday dates vary by state and territory in Australia. FIFO Planner includes holiday data for all eight jurisdictions.

You can set your home state in three places: your account page, the roster form (“Home State (for public holidays)”), and the holiday region picker on the dashboard, which can also save it as your default. If no state is set, only the holidays that apply everywhere are shown.

How holidays appear on your calendar

Each holiday gets a small marker in the top-right corner of its day. On larger screens the holiday's name is written in the day cell too, and tapping a day opens a detail sheet with the holiday shown alongside any events you have added. The month summary counts how many holidays fall in the month you are viewing.

Holidays are on by default. If a busy month feels cluttered, switch them off with the “Holidays” option in the calendar settings; events and the swing changeover markers have their own switches.

Holidays on swing and on R&R

On the calendar a holiday looks the same whether it lands on a swing day or an R&R day. What tells you which is the colour of the day itself, because swing and R&R days have their own colours. A holiday on swing is one to check against your award or enterprise agreement, or to plan leave around. A holiday on R&R is a day at home you can plan family time, travel or appointments around.

Pro adds Insights, which does the counting for you. It shows how many holidays fall on your swing this year, lists future holidays on swing as “leave wins” (one day of annual leave gets you home for that holiday, with up to four shown), and lists holidays that land on your R&R as long weekends ahead.

FIFO Planner is a planning tool and does not calculate pay. For how a public holiday on a swing day affects your pay or leave, see the guidance below.

Where the dates come from

Holiday dates come from a public holiday data service. FIFO Planner stores them and refreshes them when they are more than 30 days old, and it loads the current and next year so upcoming holidays are ready. If the service cannot be reached, the app falls back to a built-in list that can be out of date. Treat the overlay as a planning aid, and confirm important dates with your state government.

When you export your roster to a calendar file, the “Include Holidays” option (on by default) adds each holiday as an all-day event labelled “Public Holiday” with your state. See calendar export for how the file is built.

Public holidays by state for 2026

These counts include the weekend date and the Monday “additional day” where a state observes both, and come from the Fair Work Ombudsman's lists, which are built from each state's own. Each link opens a 2/1 roster calendar for that state with the full list, and the calendar index has the other patterns and 2027.

Tasmania and the ACT are supported in the app but have no calendar pages here, because there is little FIFO rostering from them.

Official public holiday guidance

Public holiday entitlements under the National Employment Standards are published by the Fair Work Ombudsman. If you have questions about how a public holiday on a swing day affects your pay or leave, the Fair Work public holidays fact sheet is the authoritative reference.

Common questions

Which Australian states and territories does FIFO Planner support for public holidays?

All eight: WA, QLD, NT, SA, NSW, VIC, TAS and the ACT. Choose your home state on your account, in the roster form or from the holiday region picker on the dashboard, and that state’s holidays appear on your calendar. If no home state is set, only holidays that apply everywhere are shown.

Where do the holiday dates come from?

FIFO Planner loads them from a public holiday data service and stores them, refreshing them when they are more than 30 days old. If the service cannot be reached, the app falls back to a built-in list, which can be out of date, so confirm important dates with your state government.

What happens if a public holiday falls on my FIFO swing day?

The calendar marks the holiday on that day, and your swing and R&R colours show where it falls. FIFO Planner does not calculate pay entitlements. For that, refer to your enterprise agreement or the Fair Work Ombudsman. Pro Insights also counts the holidays that land on your swing and suggests leave to get home for them.
